Introducing 4Kids of South Florida

I met Curtis Artis, Director of Community Development at 4Kids of South Florida at the August Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce membership breakfast. We had a short conversation over breakfast and I scheduled time to meet Curtis at his office in Boca Raton.

I was impressed by Curtis’ knowledge, experience, and his passion for building programs to benefit children in crisis. Please consider helping Curtis and his organization in their mission:

Providing Hope…For Kids in Crisis…One Child at a Time      Protection Provision Permanent Solutions

by attending their gala and becoming a sponsor.

Over 11 years ago, it was difficult to open the paper without hearing about a crisis in the foster care system in Florida. The nation watched the news with anguish and horror as children were not adequately tracked; some were even lost, disappearing into the system charged with their care. The foster care system was in crisis.

A woman from a South Florida church could no longer read the daily headlines describing the abuse, neglect, and abandonment of children in our community and stay silent. She decided to be their voice. She knocked on any pastor’s door who would listen and educated herself on the foster care system, trusting God would open up people’s hearts and provide for the orphans in our community. A grassroots foster-care ministry, ChildSHARE, was started in South Florida from her vision. Over the years, the name changed to Project Teamwork 4KIDS, and finally, 4KIDS of South Florida, but the mission of “providing hope for kids in crisis” has always remained the same.

Seeing the need to draw in other churches and the faith community throughout the tri-county area, 4KIDS birthed Churches United for Foster Care in December 2002. This initiative now facilitates the involvement of more than one hundred organizations to care for the modern-day orphan in our community.

In 2005, 4KIDS welcomed His Caring Place to the team, a maternity ministry with 20 years of service to young women experiencing crisis pregnancies.

Today 4KIDS has over 100 licensed foster homes and foster families providing love and care to the foster kids in our community. In addition, 4KIDS has twelve family-style homes that serve young adults, teens, and difficult to place sibling groups.

Each month, 4KIDS provides foster parent training (Model Approach to Partnership in Parenting) to more than 30 individuals seeking to take a child into their homes.
